"When I first started the course I was a little unsure if it was right for me, or if I would get through it, but my tutor was absolutely amazing and gave me a lot of support."
A Beauty Therapy lecturer at LS College, Ruscheyne Humphrey has come full circle, having studied for her Level 2 and 3 Beauty qualifications here less than a decade ago.
Always fascinated by the beauty industry, Ruscheyne started her own business after gaining her qualifications, but felt that she wanted to do something more. “From a young age, I’ve always liked showing friends and family how to do things, so teaching was an obvious choice for me,” she says.
She made the decision to return to the College to take a Diploma in Education and Training, which was an enjoyable but challenging experience.
“It wasn’t always easy as I have a young child and am a single parent,” she says. “When I first started the course I was a little unsure if it was right for me, or if I would get through it, but my tutor was absolutely amazing and gave me a lot of support.
“The course gave me so much, both professionally and personally. I gained a lot of confidence within myself and a new sense of determination to persevere and step out of my comfort zone.”
Having successfully completed her teaching course earlier this year, Ruscheyne is now encouraging and supporting a new generation of students in her role as a Level 1 tutor.
Her advice is: “Don’t let the thought of hard work deter you from achieving your goals.” She adds: “I absolutely love having my own class. It’s such a rewarding feeling to have completed the course and now be in my own classroom applying my theory to practice.”
Ruscheyne is now studying for her assessor’s award and may study for a BA in Education and Training in the future.
