"If I were to give advice to others considering performing arts, I’d say be yourself, don’t worry about what others think. Being different makes you unique. Work hard and take every opportunity that comes your way and don’t stress out – enjoy your time learning and believe in yourself."

Second-year student, Jason Borley, is studying a Level 3 Diploma in Performing Arts at Lewisham Southwark College.

Jason’s been with the college for three years, having moved from Level 2 to Level 3. He’s now been offered an unconditional university place at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama for BA (Hons) Applied Theatre, starting in September 2016.

“I want to go on to use theatre to educate – in places like schools – as an alternative way to educate people on issues. I originally wanted to be an actor, but following helping the auditionees here at the College, I realised my passion was in teaching and helping people.

“I loved drama at school because I felt it was a way I could be myself. I’m openly gay, and have become big in campaigning for LGBT rights. I attend a youth club, called Metro, which is for people aged 16-25 who are LGBT. I find that this is a place for like-minded people and I’m able to be myself and feel supported. I’ve found that the College is a very friendly and accepting environment.
