Case Studies

Blackheath-based Toby Ott, 24, has been blind from birth - but this hasn’t stopped him pursuing further and higher education qualifications.

Toby was originally studying music at university, but the large class sizes and lack of one-on-one support was frustrating for him, so he looked elsewhere for his education. Already being interested in computers – he’s involved in beta testing for text-based games – Toby decided to do a course in IT.

He attended an Open Day at Lewisham Southwark College and, after meeting the course leader, enrolled for a foundation degree in Business IT.

When he started the programme in September 2012, Toby found the class sizes were much smaller and he received the one-to-one help required.

His lecturers make special arrangements for him; for example, writing out the visual diagrams used in exam papers so he can read them. And Toby’s support worker has a degree in IT, so he understands the subject and can provide relevant assistance.

Now in the second year, Toby is on track to finish his studies and gain a BSc (Hons) at Greenwich University, which accredits the College’s course.

Once he’s graduated, he’d like to work in the IT industry and is interested in various careers.

Toby says his time at Lewisham Southwark College has been the best educational experience he’s had and he couldn’t have succeeded without the support the College provides.
