Case Studies

"I’ve learnt that the best thing you can do is get your head down, work hard and put in the hours – it’s worth it."

Now a qualified Building Management System Controls Engineer working for S5 Controls, Dan Sherwood made the decision to do an Electrical Installation Apprenticeship after losing his job. As part of his apprenticeship, he studied Level 3 Electrical Installation at the College.

“Electrical Installation wasn’t my first choice of career, but after losing my original job I decided to retrain,” explains Dan. “Without the College I wouldn't have got through the apprenticeship. I got a lot out of the course thanks to my tutors.”

As a BMS Engineer, Dan is currently seconded to work at a large London museum, where his daily activities include checking the operation of the mechanical plant and carrying out small installations, small project management and commissioning works.

He says: “Being able to go out on my own and make a name for myself after completing my apprenticeship has been the highlight of my career. I’d like to see myself in a more senior role in a few years’ time and, one day, to start my own company.

“I’ve learnt that the best thing you can do is get your head down, work hard and put in the hours – it’s worth it.”

Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with studying, and enable you to gain recognised qualifications and essential skills while earning a wage. Find out more about apprenticeships at Lewisham Southwark College.
