"One highlight of my time at university has been the opportunity to meet professionals in my field whose work and research has completely changed my perspective of the world we live in."
Studying for a Children and Young People’s Workforce Level 3 Diploma at the College has enabled mature student Gentjana Aliaj to progress on to Goldsmiths University of London and move a step closer to fulfilling her ambition of becoming a primary school teacher.
Now studying for a degree in Education, Culture and Society, Gentjana believes her time at the College was invaluable in preparing her for Higher Education. The Diploma she took was a job-ready qualification where learners are assessed in a real working environment.
“At College I was always encouraged by my tutors to go to university. I improved my communication, IT, problem solving and team work skills, and learned how to give effective presentations. These skills are what enabled me to become a resilient student at university,” she says.
“One highlight of my time at university has been the opportunity to meet professionals in my field whose work and research has completely changed my perspective of the world we live in.
Despite having to juggle her studies alongside raising a family, Gentjana has also found time for outreach work while at Goldsmiths. “I’ve really enjoyed working as a student ambassador which has included inspiring students from disadvantaged backgrounds to go to university.
“My advice to other people hoping to go to university is to be proactive and never give up,” she says. “Be clear about what you want, and identify the steps you need to take in order to achieve your goal. Try to get involved in community projects by volunteering because you will gain invaluable skills and experience that way.”
