Hair & Beauty

This course is designed to prepare you for employment giving you a good foundation in beauty therapy hairdressing and make up industries so that you can go on to a Level 2 course or work as a supervised assistant or receptionist in a hair beauty or make up related job. This course will introduce you to a range of practical skills including related theory across the hair and beauty industry including skincare hand care foot care hair care make up face painting health and safety presenting a professional image client care retail display skills and working as part of a team.You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Hair and Beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSE's in English and maths.

    Entry Requirements

    Four GCSEs (must include English) at grades F-G/1-2. An entry level qualification in a relevant vocational area (desirable but not essential). You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you will complete a free writing task that indicates an appropriate level of English ability and may be asked to perform a trade test if required.

    Assessment Method

    You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will be using e-portfolios and will be trained how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years. The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment: - Practical observation: you carry out the skill on clients - Oral questioning: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill. - Written: you will complete assignments and online exams.

    Aims of the course

    This course is an introduction to the hair and beauty sector and is designed to introduce you to a range of practical skills from across the hair and beauty industries.

    Progression Opportunities

    This qualification will prepare you for further study at level 2 and you may choose to develop your skills in a specialist pathway by undertaking vocational qualifications in beauty therapy level 2 such as:VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty counter consultancy. VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up artistry.VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing and/or barbering.

    Facilities

    Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien salon on site.There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies and there will be competition work. You will be required to purchase a uniform and a kit. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided on interview. Coronavirus update
