The Supported Learning Skills for Performing Arts learners of Lewisham College recently put on an outstanding play titled "An Epic Journey" that showcased their life stories through creativity. The play was a culmination of the journeys of each learner, and the script was based on their unique experiences.
Each learner's story was told through an emotional or comedic route, which allowed the audience to understand and appreciate their struggles and triumphs. The learners wore costumes that represented the focus of their story, and with the help of the rest of the cast, they brought their stories to life through a combination of acting, dance, and words.
The performance was a huge success and concluded with a live concert where learners performed renditions of different songs, with vocalists at the centre and the band surrounding them.
Vanessa Adenuga, said: “I was excited but nervous for both performances; however, I knew once I got up on stage and started performing, it would be great. It went well, and I felt super comfortable throughout. I love playing the drums, so that was the highlight for me. I’ve learnt a lot throughout the process: about myself, concentration, instruments, rhythm, vocals, and memorising my lines. Participating in these projects can be challenging, but it is ultimately worth it.”
Jamie Stevenson, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “At Lewisham College, we put our learners at the forefront of everything we do. We endeavour to foster an environment that allows them to explore their creativity, artistry, and imagination. Both the drama and dance performance and the concert allowed our learners to showcase their skills whilst also telling their stories, allowing them to build their confidence.
“We are extremely proud of our Supported Learning Skills for Performing Arts learners for creating and performing an inspiring play and captivating concert and delivering them in front of a live audience. The performances demonstrated their commitment and continuous hard work in their studies. We look forward to seeing what they do next!”
