Lewisham College's Maths Competition 2024 was a resounding success, with over 200 participants across six faculties entering the contest. Initial entrants were tasked with answering 15 questions ranging in difficulty from Level 1 to GCSE Higher Tier, and included areas across Numbers, Algebra, Geometry, Ratio and Proportions and Probability.

The competition peaked in the bustling Breakspears Hall, where the five qualified finalists showcased their skills before an enthusiastic and supportive audience of peers and staff, fostering a strong sense of community.

Each finalist was provided with a flipboard and faced a series of challenging, quick-fire questions that not only tested their skills and problem-solving abilities but also provided a valuable learning experience. All the finalists showcased their skills and talent, inspiring the audience with their dedication, with IT learner Abdulhamid Sonaik winning first place, taking home the coveted trophy for his outstanding performance.

All the finalists were presented with trophies by Lewisham College Principal Jamie Stevenson. He said: "It's truly inspiring to see such dedication and enthusiasm from our learners. Events like the Maths Competition highlight the incredible talent within our college and show the importance of developing strong problem-solving skills that will benefit our students for years to come."

Learners in the audience for the final were also issued with certificates of participation, celebrating their part in a fantastic contest, which could be used to claim as an Employability, Enrichment and Pastoral (EEP) hour.

Joyce Elemson, Head of the Maths at Lewisham College, organised and hosted the event, speaking passionately about the importance of mathematics in daily life, from budgeting to problem-solving and beyond. She said: "I am incredibly proud of everyone who participated in the competition, especially the finalists who demonstrated exceptional problem solving skills, and I encourage them to continue nurturing their passion for learning and mathematics. The high standard of Mathematical ability displayed serves as an aspirational benchmark for all learners, showing how such skills can be applied, not only in academic contexts but in their personal and everyday life."

The competition was a celebration of mathematical talent, inspiring both competitors and attendees and reaffirming Lewisham College's commitment to ensuring our learners have an enjoyable and successful experience with the college. It's a moment of pride for everyone involved.
