Lewisham College’s Level 3 Business and IT learners recently completed an exciting employer-created project focused on resilience and career growth. The pioneering initiative tasked the learners with exploring the crucial role of resilience within their chosen sectors, as well as developing a comprehensive plan for a career-enhancing Job Fair.

The project aimed to help learners understand how resilience manifests in the workplace and provide them with practical strategies for overcoming challenges, improving their teamwork abilities, and mastering public speaking.

Working in groups, the learners created 7-10 minute presentations showcasing their research and proposed Job Fair, which they presented to a panel of the College's partner employers, which included representatives from Lewisham Council, Barclays Bank, ISS Facility Services, UCL, Headlinerz Barbershop, Beyond Expectations, Goldsmiths University and WSI.

Fola Braimoh from Goldsmiths University sat on the judging panel and said: “Doing things like this is investing in the learners themselves, improving their skills and getting them ready for the real world. A lot of them will go far if they hold on to that dream and have that hunger and desire.”

Winning teams were chosen across several categories, with the judging panel assessing the presentations based on their depth of research, practicality, creativity, teamwork, and clarity. All teams received critical feedback, and the category winners were given awards during a ceremony attended by the participating learners and their peers.

Muhammad Hafeez, a learner who participated in the project, said, “The experience is very eye-opening in a variety of ways. Every single person was there to judge us and give us insights into what we should and shouldn't do. For example, in our project, we were wrong with our funds, and they advised us on what we should do next time and how we could generally improve.”

This employer-led project was a fantastic opportunity for learners to gain valuable skills that will directly impact their future careers. With this being the first group to tackle this project, the participants have become trailblazers for future learners who participate.

Lewisham College is proud to offer learners projects like this that support our learners' professional and personal growth and looks forward to continuing to work with business partners on future initiatives.
