Lewisham College’s Performing Arts department welcomed students from local primary schools to our campus for a special seasonal treat—a lively performance of an original pantomime, Queen Rat and the Catford Cat, a show full of music, laughter, and festive cheer!
Children from Lucas Vale, John Stainer and Grinling Gibbons Primary Schools filled the college’s theatre to enjoy the Christmas spectacle, which featured plenty of audience participation. The show was a hit with a unique blend of current and local references, making it a fun and relatable experience for everyone in the crowd.
This year’s panto featured various characters, including a fairy on roller skates, a K-Pop dance group and a hilariously useless escapologist. All the learners' performances kept the young audience engaged from start to finish. As always, the pantomime also didn’t shy away from the classic audience call-outs and beloved panto traditions, including the hilarious ugly sister duo and the ever-popular use of slapstick comedy. The children were invited to get involved on stage and sing along to some iconic Christmas hits, which all added to the fun atmosphere in the room.
Adu Antwi, Head of the Creative Arts Faculty at Lewisham College, said: "I'm delighted we were able to provide this platform for our Performing Arts learners to explore their passion for drama and performance. Our young learners demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication to put on a brilliant show that entertained children and adults alike."
The performance was a fantastic showcase of the talent and creativity of Lewisham College’s learners, and it was clear from the smiles on the children's faces that the event was a resounding success.
Performing Arts learner Empress-Akalah Johnson- Howe who took part in the show, said: "It was so good, I would love to do it all over again. It's really made me realise I want to be an actor in the future. It was scary performing to 5-7-year-olds, but I did my best and had a lot of fun. Now, I would love to perform more in front of children; it was a lovely experience."
Thank you to all the learners, staff, and volunteers who helped bring the show to life. Lewisham College looks forward to welcoming more local schools for future performances and continues to be a hub for creative arts in the community.
