Lewisham College hosted an impressive London regional heat for the SkillBuild 2024 competition. SkillBuild is part of the World Skills competition, aimed at raising standards to bridge the gap between students and companies. Produced by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in collaboration with Go Construct, this popular multi-skills trades event allows learners and apprentices to showcase their skills and potential at the training level.

Competitors across ten different trades will be evaluated on their skills and knowledge. SkillBuild provides a platform for individuals to advance their career options and enhance their technical and employability abilities. They participated in five trade categories, including Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Drylining Systems, and Carpentry.

Participants were tested on their skills, knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and capability to work under pressure, all under the careful eyes of experts and experienced judges. The top eight scorers from the regional qualifiers in each trade area will be invited to compete in the UK National Final at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena in November.

Carpentry apprentice, Tia Bloomfield, said: “It is my second time participating in this competition, and I have been an apprentice for three years. I have noticed that people are genuinely putting in more effort and becoming more competitive.”

The event also included engaging discussions with CITB CEO, Tim Balcon and an employability panel. These discussions allowed learners and staff to ask questions about Tim’s vision for CITB and the construction industry. The employability panel highlighted career opportunities within the construction industry.

Haley Lauren, an employability panellist, said: “SkillBuild is a great platform for us to connect with potential talent. From today’s event, I saw a lot of enthusiasm in learners. The engagement provided crucial information about how to prepare for a job with us, what platforms to apply on, and how to progress further.”

Jamie Stevenson, Principal Lewisham College said: “The collaboration between SkillBuild and Lewisham College is truly remarkable. This event shows our commitment to providing our learners with the opportunity to showcase their talents and develop new skills in a competitive and supportive environment. The dedication and hard work demonstrated by all participants is motivating for our learners.”
