Lewisham College recently had the privilege of hosting an inspiring talk for our Business and IT learners from Jenny Barber, Director of Talent at Investment 2020. The event provided a valuable opportunity for learners to explore the world of investment and gain insights into one of the most dynamic sectors of the global economy.

Jenny’s talk, ‘Exploring Careers in Investment,’ focused on the exciting opportunities within the investment banking sector and the growing role of digital skills in the modern workplace. Addressing a large crowd, she spoke passionately about the investment management sector and the significant career potential within it.

A key theme of Jenny’s presentation was the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the investment sector. She explained how AI is being used to reduce unnecessary workloads, increase efficiency, and ultimately deliver better client service. As the industry evolves, she emphasised how digital skills have become a highly sought-after asset in today’s job market, particularly for young people entering the workforce.

Jenny also shed light on the reality of the labour market and the competitive nature of apprenticeship applications. According to Jenny, learners can expect to submit 25-40 applications before securing just one or two interviews, underscoring the importance of perseverance and resilience when building a career.

In addition to offering advice on navigating the job application process, Jenny encouraged learners to stay informed about current events, particularly in business and politics. She stressed the importance of building relationships, listening to diverse perspectives, and thinking broadly about applications.

“It’s a numbers game,” Jenny advised, urging learners to apply to as many apprenticeships as possible to maximise their chances of success.

She also shared valuable insights into the Investment 2020 Trainee Programme, which has been providing traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities for over 12 years. The programme offers aspiring young professionals the chance to develop their careers within the investment sector, with a strong emphasis on practical experience and skill development.

One key takeaway from Jenny’s talk was the importance of building networks early in one’s career.

“Don’t compare yourself to others—focus on your own path and your own application,” Jenny advised. “And remember, luck plays a part. To generate that luck, you need to keep applying and stay persistent.”

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where learners had the opportunity to ask Jenny about her career journey and receive advice on how to succeed in the competitive world of investment.

Lewisham College is committed to providing our learners with real-world insights and connections to help them build successful careers. Jenny Barber’s talk was just one of the many ways we’re helping our learners access the knowledge and opportunities they need to thrive in their chosen field.
