Young learners on the English and Maths GCSE course at Lewisham College put their creativity to the test at a writing workshop delivered by the Colleges’ Learning Centre team. Each learner was given the same passage which had multiple blank spaces throughout, allowing them to narrate and create their own stories by changing different words.
During the workshop, each learner had the opportunity to speak aloud their story in front of the group, allowing them to see the different perspectives and narrating styles which helped to build on their communication skills and confidence in public speaking.
Charithya Geevindi Withanathanthri, an English and Maths GCSE student, said: "Taking part in the creative writing session at Lewisham College's Learning Centre was amazing. I discovered many unfamiliar words, and it was fun to use the knowledge I already had while learning new things. Creative writing is an important part of the exam paper, so having these sessions is helpful, especially with upcoming mock exams. I have always been passionate about English, it is my favourite subject, and I enjoy being adventurous too, so this has been the perfect combination for me."
Jayne Morgan, Vice Principal at Lewisham College, said: "At Lewisham College, we endeavour to offer opportunities for our learners to apply their creativity and knowledge within both professional and personal settings.
"The creative writing workshop provides our learners with varied avenues for self-expression, helping them to gain confidence in written and spoken communication, which is essential for their educational development. Our goal is to continually inspire learners, ensuring belief in the value of their work and instilling pride throughout their journey with us."
