Learners on the Bricklaying Programme at Lewisham College gained valuable on-site experience by visiting the historic Lots Road Power Station in Chelsea, London where they had the chance to gain an insight into building site conditions and to speak with professionals within the construction industry, including the brickwork contractor.
The trip also allowed learners to see aspects of bricklaying they have covered in the classroom being applied in the real world. Visiting active building sites such as the Lots Road Power Station aims to help learners prepare for life in the workplace after leaving Lewisham College. The contractor will soon have a site opening near Lewisham, which will provide learners with potential opportunities for work placements.
Asfa Sohail, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “At Lewisham College, we strive to provide learners with opportunities for real-world experience, helping them to enter the workplace prepared and professional.
“It is fantastic that our Bricklaying learners had the opportunity to visit the Lots Road Power Station and had this valuable experience which will assist them in their learner journey and prepare them for the world of work in their chosen industry.”
Gurjinder Puar, Senior Project Manager at Hutchison Property Group said: “It was a pleasure for us to invite bricklaying students from Lewisham College to our site at Chelsea Waterfront, Lots Road. The learners got a first-hand glimpse of a live construction site, the brickwork and terracotta restoration in action on the Lots Road Power Station and its chimneys, and the completed hand-set bricks on our new building facades.”
