As part of Storytelling Week celebrations, Lewisham College recently hosted a creative writing competition, inviting learners from across the college to craft short stories under the theme "Under the Moonlit Sky." The challenge was for learners to create a captivating narrative in under 300 words, showcasing their storytelling skills and imagination.

The competition was open to a range of categories, including adult and 16-18, including Supported Learning students, with each category offering its own unique set of challenges and opportunities for participants. The result was a fantastic array of diverse stories, reflecting a variety of experiences, perspectives, and creative voices within the College’s community.

Each piece reflected unique experiences, different writing styles, and creative voices that spanned a wide range of genres. Some stories embraced elements of fantasy and wonder, while others explored deeper themes of personal growth, struggle, and hope. The creativity demonstrated by learners was both impressive and inspiring, highlighting the importance of providing opportunities for self-expression through art and words.

Each story submitted was judged by a panel of staff from different departments in the college and after the winners had been decided there was an award ceremony that took place in the College's Learning Centre, where all participants were invited. The winners from each category were then declared and celebrated for their achievements. The college’s Principal, Jamie Stevenson, presented winners with certificates and vouchers, acknowledging their hard work and creativity.

Jamie Stevenson expressed his pride in the students’ achievements. He said: “We are always delighted to see our students showcasing their talents, and this writing competition is a perfect example of how they engage with the arts and express themselves creatively. I'm privileged to have been able to celebrate their hard work with the awards ceremony.”

The event not only highlighted the individual achievements of the winners but also showcased the collective creative spirit of Lewisham College’s student body. It was a reminder of the importance of fostering an environment where students can explore their artistic potential and develop the skills needed to express themselves effectively. The ability to tell stories – whether through written words, art, or performance – is a powerful tool for communication, and Lewisham College is proud to offer a platform to hone these skills.

Lewisham College is committed to empowering learners to embrace their creativity, develop their skills, and make their voices heard – both in the classroom and beyond.
