Business learners at Lewisham College organised and put on a summer sales event intended to help them translate their acquired theoretical knowledge into a practical setting with part of the proceeds going to support a local charity within the borough.
Learners became entrepreneurs selling freshly made produce at the Lewisham Way campus for both staff and students to indulge in. Their selection consisted of brownies, alfajores, mocktails, coconut sponge cake, vegan lemon sponge cake, item bundles as well as shoe cleaning products.
This event was a good opportunity for Business learners to present the skills that they developed in lessons during their course, such as writing a business proposal, planning events, personal selling, teamwork, and finances for business ideas. The Business department plans to turn this event into a reoccurring annual event to continue to offer future learners the chance at gaining valuable in-house work experience.
Joash Lewis, Business student, said: “We have received a good response so far, it has exceeded our expectations. There has been a good atmosphere over the last few days as we are all raising money for charity.
“As part of this project, I have been able to improve my customer service, communication, and people skills. I have also learnt the correct way to respond to customer feedback and handle queries and concerns professionally. This experience has helped to prepare me for what running a business is really like.”
